Use It or Lose It – Why Everyday Movement Matters

We’ve all heard the phrase: “use it or lose it.”

And when it comes to our bodies, there’s a lot of truth in that.

But this isn’t about fear.
It’s about awareness. Plus a gentle reminder that small movements really do matter.

Our Bodies Are Made to Move

Movement isn’t just something we do in a class or at the gym.

It’s part of everyday life:

  • Reaching up to a cupboard
  • Bending down to pick something up
  • Turning, twisting, stretching

These are the movements that keep us feeling mobile, capable and independent.

What Happens When We Stop Moving?

Life gets busy. Routines change. Energy dips.

And over time, it’s easy to move less without even realising.

You might notice:

  • Feeling a bit stiffer getting up
  • Less flexibility than before
  • Everyday tasks feeling slightly harder

This isn’t about doing anything wrong. It’s just what happens when movement becomes less frequent.

Exercise vs. Everyday Movement

Here’s the good news:
You don’t need intense workouts to support your body.

Everyday movement counts.

In fact, it’s often more important than occasional bursts of exercise.

Things like:

  • Gentle stretching
  • Walking
  • Chair-based movement
  • Playing with your children

All of these help keep your body moving in a natural, supportive way.

Little Ways to Move More

You don’t need to overhaul your routine. Just sprinkle movement into your day:

  • Stretch while watching TV
  • Stand up and move between tasks
  • Take the long way around when you can
  • Join a class that feels welcoming and manageable

Looking After Future You

The small things you do now make a difference later.

Not in a dramatic, all-or-nothing way—but in a steady, supportive one.

So think of movement as something you’re doing for yourself, both now and in the future.

Because keeping your body moving doesn’t have to be hard.

It just needs to happen.

  1. Reaching, bending, turning. Those three are exactly what people stop doing without noticing, usually because the kitchen and the house get rearranged so nothing is high or low any more. It feels sensible and it quietly removes the daily practice. Nice reminder that the small stuff counts, and that it is about awareness and not fear.
